Vinyl Listing
Cuca Records Pressing Plant, 1964

Vinyl, disc, wax or platter it really doesn’t matter what you call it, be it seven-inches across or 12, it feels good, looks good, plays good and would probably taste good under the right circumstances. It has to be the only inert object that arouses such passion, such adoration and its appeal is enduring. This new-fangled Compact Disc is all very well and good, but it’s in a drawer, you can’t see it playing, there is no needle bouncing around dangerously in a groove threatening to skip at any moment. You can grab a record from the deck, chuck it in a sleeve, grab another one and throw it on, lower the tone arm and pow – instant joy.

Vinyl really got going in 1948 with CBS’s Long Playing 12-inch black disk spinning at 331/3 rpm up against RCA’s seven-inch rpm platter in beautiful coloured wax. Ultimately they both won and so did the public as they bought millions of copies of both formats in fabulous sleeves with great labels and at times excitingly-shaped centres on the 45s. The argument as to whether vinyl sounds better than CD will rage forever, but when it comes to true love, vinyl wins every time.
